The following new images taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft are now available:
- Faulting in Amazonis Planitia
This HiRISE image is centered on a long "strike-slip" fault on the young plains in the Amazonis region of Mars. - Light Layered Deposits in Valles Marineris
This image shows bright layered deposits near the junction of Coprates Chasma and Melas Chasma, part of Valles Marineris. - Layers in Gale Crater Central Mound
This image shows a portion of the central mound in the impact crater Gale that is of interest to scientists because it is composed of light-toned layered deposits. - Impact Crater Filled with Layered Deposits
This image shows an impact crater in Utopia Planitia, in the northern hemisphere of Mars, that is filled with layered material. - Martian Barchans
Barchan dunes are common on both Earth and Mars. These dunes are very distinctive in shape, and are important because they can tell scientists about the environment in which they formed.
