J-L Bertaux et al. have reported the detection of light emissions in the night side Martian atmosphere with the SPICAM ultraviolet (UV) spectrometer on board Mars Express. The emission is assigned to the creation of NO molecules after N and O atoms are produced by electron UV photodissociation of O2, CO2 , and N2 in the dayside upper atmosphere and transported to the night side.
